My name is Elizabeth Wanjiru Wathuti commonly referred to as Liz Mazingira. I am a passionate environmentalist, the fourth recipient of Wangari Maathai Scholarship award, founder of Green Generation Initiative and an award winning environmental blogger
I have always had a great passion for environmental conservation since my childhood. I’m a finalist student at Kenyatta University pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Studies and Community Development. I have previously served in the leadership of Kenyatta University Environmental Club (KUNEC) for three consecutive years. I won the National Mazingira Challenge competition as the public speaker of the year 2017 while sensitizing people about the role of youths in combating climate change.
Due to my outstanding passion and personal commitment for environmental conservation inspired by the late professor Wangari Maathai, I was awarded the Wangari Maathai Scholarship Award by the Greenbelt movement, Kenya Community Development Foundation and the Rockefeller foundation as the fourth recipient since its’ initiation in 2013. This award aims at developing action oriented young people with strong values and commitment to environmental conservation.
This award motivated me to embark on a journey to light more candles by nurturing young environmental enthusiasts. I began an initiative in 2016 (Green Generation Initiative) through which I now nurture young environmental enthusiasts by training them and offering them practical environmental education sessions. I also involve them practically through a campaign that I dubbed adopt a tree campaign where I donate trees to schools and ensure that each child plants, waters, nurtures and adopts a tree in their school compound. Through this campaign, I have been able to plant over 5,000 tree seedlings in high schools and primary schools in Kenya. I have a vision of being part of the solution in attaining and surpassing Kenya’s 10% forest cover target by 2030 and at the same time raise additional young environmental enthusiasts through this initiative. I also has 30 passionate and committed volunteers who help me out in the initiatives’ operations.
With an aim of sensitizing more people and creating awareness on global environmental challenges and the need to take action, I opened an environmental blog; www.lizmazingira.com where I publish environmental articles for awareness creation. On 19th May, 2018, my blog received a recognition from the Bloggers Association of Kenya (BAKE) awards and I received an award of the best Environmental blog of the year 2018.
Recently, I was privileged to attend the International seminar on Sustainable regions in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Spain where I had an opportunity to share my journey as an environmentalist, my initiative (Green Generation Initiative), the Kenyan story on how we are greening our nation as Kenyans and I also delivered as speech about fostering enthusiasm among young people in Africa. I am determined to leave my mark just as the late professor Wangari Maathai did.
